Sew a nest for a baby with your own hands. DIY nest - cocoon for newborns

It is customary to swaddle babies to ensure a restful sleep without being scared by the movements of their arms. To facilitate the process, a cocoon diaper with a zipper was invented. It makes the swaddling process easier for new parents. The cocoon-shaped diaper allows the baby freedom of movement.

Features of the cocoon diaper

In the modern world, they believe that there is no need to swaddle children tightly. This type of diaper leaves the baby freedom, only slightly limiting it. Does not require special swaddling skills from parents.

The shape of the cocoon gives the baby a feeling of security, like in the mother's belly. This helps the baby adapt to the new environment. The cocoon diaper for newborns with a zipper is sewn from cotton jersey. It does not cause allergic reactions and fits well to the skin and does not restrict movement. The design is incredibly convenient and compact.

If we consider which is better, a knitted diaper or a cocoon diaper, then the second one wins in many properties. Sewn like a cocoon, it has no internal seams and will not rub the baby’s delicate skin.

The cocoon diaper with a zipper is not suitable for premature babies.

When choosing a cocoon diaper, pay attention to its size and the quality of the material from which it is made. The neck should be wide so as not to put pressure on the neck. Keep this in mind if your baby is large. Buy them in specialized stores to avoid low-quality goods. A low price may indicate poor quality, uneven seams, or unnatural materials.

Pattern of a euro cocoon diaper with a zipper

The usual diaper has been replaced by an incredibly comfortable euro diaper, similar to a bag with a lock. It provides comfort for the baby, in which he remains in the fetal position to which he is accustomed.

It is easy to sew this type of diaper with your own hands. The pattern is very simple, so any mom can handle the sewing, even if she has no sewing skills.

Choice of fabric. First, we select the fabric, it should be natural and stretch well. You will need a cut about 120 cm long and 150 cm wide. The pattern of a cocoon diaper with a zipper is made first on paper, and only then transferred to fabric. Allow seam allowances of about 0.5 - 1 cm.

Dimensions. When choosing a size, take into account the child's height. For every 2 centimeters of growth, add 12 cm of canvas. The main condition is that the seams and zippers are made on the outside of the product. This is done so as not to cause irritation to the skin. For stitching we use a zigzag stitch. The time for cutting and sewing a diaper is about one hour.

You just need to put your baby in this diaper and fasten the clasps. The baby's arms can be placed on the sides or so that they are at the chest. He will feel comfortable and calm in it.

    MASTER CLASS FROM ELENA KOROLEVA

Any mother is happy when her baby is born

restful, well-fed and sleeping. And for him to sleep well, it is necessary

provide comfortable sleeping conditions. And it helps a lot with this

nest-cocoon. This is a very necessary thing. This is a nest

It’s also double-sided, which is nice.

Having reviewed many master classes on sewing a nest, and tried different options, removing some

unnecessary, in my opinion, manipulations, this way of sewing a cocoon nest was “born”, which I hope you will like and

To sew a cocoon we will need:

    Cotton 2 types, size 70*90 cm;

    Sintepon 300 - 35*65 cm;

    Scissors;

    Filler (I use air down).

    1. Fold the fabric face to face. Pin the pattern with pins (I have a pattern of 2 parts: the middle is 35*60cm and the sides).

Cut with seam allowances of 1 cm. My pattern consists of 2 parts: the middle and the sides. This is done for convenience,

so that in the future you can use the middle of the pattern for a padding polyester mattress.

    2. Please note that at the bottom of the “sleeve” there is an indentation of 2 cm. It is necessary to stitch along the perimeter from the indentation, as well as

the lower part of the cocoon, between the “sleeves”. Thanks to the fact that we will also sew the lower part, where the mattress is, - then there will be no

ugly edges that will have to be decorated with something.

    3. We make a line at a distance of 5-7 mm from the edge, so that the hem is not very thick. My machine has a function

“needle positioning”, when I can move it in any direction (right-left) to the distance I need, so the needle

It doesn't exactly fit in the center of the paw in the photo.

Places where we don’t do stitching! We leave these places unsewn!

    4. We turn out the cocoon through one of the holes; this is quite easy to do.

    5. Align the seam along the perimeter and pin it together. On the front side we sew a line at a distance of 1.5-2 cm

from the edge; This is where the tape will be inserted.

It should look like this. We sew the protruding “tail” by hand.

    6. Take the middle from the pattern, put it on the padding polyester and cut out the mattress piece with an allowance of 1.5 cm, except for the

bottom - it is strictly according to the pattern.

    7. We insert the padding polyester through the holes of the “sleeves” and align it in the center. We pin it with pins. Lower

part of the padding polyester should be tightly connected to the bottom of the cotton part so that there is no void.

    8. We lay a line, having previously marked the fabric according to a paper pattern (I have a self-disappearing marker, which disappears very quickly, and the markings on the fabric are not visible. During the time until it disappears, you need to quickly, quickly lay

line. A stitch length of 5mm is sufficient.

You can also lay horizontal lines, giving the mattress a shape (but even without these lines it will not go anywhere,

and securely fixed, because we left allowances of 1.5-2 cm on the synthetic padding pattern. For sewing thick synthetic fibers

I use the upper conveyor for products - it is sold separately, it is a very convenient thing!

    9. Insert the ribbon into the upper part of the cocoon.

With this master class, you can sew your own double-sided cocoon-nest for newborns. We remind you that you can purchase all the necessary materials for sewing on our website.

To sew a cocoon you will need:

Master class on sewing a cocoon for newborns

    1. First you need to make a pattern. The dimensions of the cocoon will be as in the picture. The most convenient way is to fold a piece of fabric in half and draw only one half of the pattern. In order to cut out the second half of the cocoon, fold the second piece of fabric in half, apply the first cut pattern folded in half, trace it and also cut it out. When choosing fabric and drawing up a pattern, be sure to consider the direction of the fabric. If you are afraid of making a mistake, it is better to take 2 pieces of 95x95 cm.
    2. When unfolded it should look like this:
    3. We fold the patterns face to face and pin along the contour every 15-20 cm so that nothing moves anywhere
    4. We need to stitch the cocoon around the entire perimeter with an indentation of 0.5 cm from the edge. But! you need to leave 2 technological holes for inserting the bottom and further stuffing the sides with holofiber. Each hole should be large enough for you to fit your hand through it. We will leave these holes on the inside of the cocoon. The seams should be placed like this

    5. First we sew the bottom. Be sure to backtack at the beginning and end of the seams to keep the seams strong.
    6. It should turn out like this, make notches in the corners so that the fabric does not puff up after turning it inside out

    7. Now we make a second seam along the outer contour
    8. We turn it inside out through the technological holes, make sure that it turns out everywhere and that there is no fabric left wrapped inside.
    9. Next we need to lay another seam along the outer contour, but the distance from the edge should be already 1 cm. This way we will make a groove for the ties. You need to measure such a distance from the previous seam that you can insert a safety pin and mark this place with a tailor's pin. This is where the seam will begin and exactly the same way it should end on the other side.

    10. We make a seam on the front side of the cocoon, the indentation should be 1 - 1.5 cm
    11. It should turn out like this
    12. Now we need to make a marking inside the cocoon along which we will sew the bottom. It is necessary to accurately repeat the outer contour, the difference between the edge and the internal markings should be 15 cm. To ensure that the padding polyester does not move anywhere during washing, it is necessary to quilt it several times, especially at the bottom. Future seams are marked in red
    13. Next, cut out the bottom from a piece of padding polyester. It should be 3-5 cm larger than the inner outline, otherwise it will be difficult to sew on
    14. We roll the bottom into a tube and insert it inside the cocoon through the technological hole.
    15. We straighten it inside the cocoon with both hands, again through the technological holes. We align the seams so that they fall on the padding polyester and pin them with pins so that nothing moves out anywhere
    16. We sew along the markings. Make sure that the fabric is not pinched anywhere. Quite often this happens on the bottom layer of fabric.
    17. Use a safety pin to insert the grosgrain ribbon. You can also use satin, but then you need to burn the edges with a lighter so that it doesn’t fray.

    18. Through the technological holes we fill the sides with holofiber
    19. We sew up the technological holes with a hidden seam
    20. The cocoon is ready!

A nest or cocoon for a newborn is a special warm and cozy mattress with sides, on which the baby will be comfortable anywhere - in his own crib, on the sofa, or in a large bed. In addition, with such a device it is much easier to lull the baby in your arms and then put him in the crib without causing him discomfort. It is very easy to sew a nest for newborns with your own hands using a detailed master class. Even beginning needlewomen can cope with this task.

We sew a warm nest for newborns with our own hands

The closed shape of the nest is very comfortable for the baby; he takes the most physiological and correct position. And the space around creates a feeling of warmth and comfort, similar to that which surrounded the child in the womb.

Regardless of the size of the bed, the baby feels more protected and sleeps peacefully. This is extremely important for the child, since excessive anxiety leads to digestive dysfunction, colic and negatively affects the baby’s nervous system.

The nest is indispensable in cases where the child needs to sleep with his parents in bed, and at the same time separate his personal space. Parents are often afraid of disturbing the baby in his sleep, pinning him down or accidentally pushing him out of bed, so such a device will come in handy.

The nest will definitely come in handy when traveling if you need to spend the night in a hotel where there is no cot.

In addition to sleeping, such a nest is convenient to feed the baby and engage in its physical development (gymnastics, massage). This is especially true for night feedings if the mother finds it difficult to feed her baby while sitting. The sides will also provide support when placing the baby on his side, on his tummy, and will help him learn to hold his head up.

Beautiful ideas for nest colors for a boy and a girl can be seen in the photo:

To make a nest you will need:
    • Two pieces of fabric (plain and patterned), measuring approximately 100 cm. For girls, it is customary to choose pink and lilac tones, for boys - blue and light blue. And shades of yellow, green, white and beige will be universal.
    • Sintepon as a filler.
    • Lace – 3 m.
    • Bias binding – 2.6 m.
    Description of the work progress.

We begin our master class by drawing a pattern according to the dimensions indicated in the photograph:

Using the pattern, we cut out 2 parts from different fabrics. Then they need to be basted, folded inside out and stitched, leaving the bottom part open (starting from the middle of the tongues).

Turning the work right side out, we sew bias tape along the seams on both sides.

We cut out a three-layer piece of padding polyester 30x60 cm for filling and round the corners.

Fill the mattress and make a line around it (approximately 15 cm away from the edges).

Using a 200x60 cm padding polyester tube, we stuff the sides of the mattress. You can also use trimmings.

You need to insert a lace into the resulting “path” between the seam and the bias tape (using a pin). We machine sew the open edges and close the seams using bias tape.

By tightening the lace, we give the mattress the desired shape. The lace can be replaced with a beautiful ribbon.

    The baby's nest is ready!

A large pattern of a nest for a baby looks like this:

These nest sizes are suitable for a child up to 6-7 months. When choosing a fabric, it is very important to pay attention to the fact that it is natural (preferably 100% cotton), soft and pleasant to the touch. You can use any cotton material, including calico and flannel.

For decoration you can use ribbons and small embroidery.

How to sew a cocoon with Velcro:

This pattern will help you sew a cocoon nest with Velcro legs, which will also be very comfortable for a newborn and a child in the first months of life.

The dimensions of the cocoon are 85x60 cm. The legs do not need to be cut out separately, but the work can be done in the form of an envelope. To securely fix the cocoon on your head, you will need a cord for the hood.

For sewing, fleece, flannel, and fleece knitwear are used. In the cold season, it is recommended to make a double cocoon, consisting of a lining and main fabric. Such cocoons are very convenient for sleeping and attending doctor’s appointments, but you should not overuse them, since the baby needs to move actively and freely.

Cocoons for newborns can be knitted or crocheted. To do this, you need to choose soft hypoallergenic yarn. The measurements you need to use are the girth of the torso under the armpits and the length from the armpits to the heels. You can choose the pattern to your liking; patterns that are too large and complex can create uneven pressure on the baby’s skin and cause discomfort, so it’s worth choosing simpler ones (elastic band, rice pattern, etc.).

Video on the topic of the article

For everyone who is interested in the topic of sewing cocoons and nests for babies, who wants to take a closer look at the sewing process and get new ideas for creativity, we have prepared a selection of lessons:

Recently, so-called cocoons for newborns have become very popular. And it’s really a very practical thing, it’s a pity that when I gave birth to my son, no one came up with the idea of such a universal mattress. I had to roll up the blanket so as not to accidentally “press it” when I slept next to him. Look for different uncomfortable positions to feed, but here the baby’s personal space is not violated and you can put the head on the side to feed calmly

It’s good that my friends continue to give birth to children, and I can give them such charming cocoons - mattresses.

In this article I will tell you how to sew a cocoon for a newborn with your own hands with step-by-step unique photographs. It's not as difficult as it seems. Attached to the article is a pattern and diagram for sewing a toy - a Scops Owl and a cocoon - a very useful thing for every mother and her baby.

Anyone can sew such beauty if they want. To do this, you need a minimum set: fabric (chintz or calico) 120 cm with a width of at least 140 cm, filler (sintepon 2 cm thick or 700 grams of holofiber), 2 m of cord, matching threads, household sewing machine.

Using the diagram provided, make a pattern on the fabric.

From the remaining fabric, cut out a 4 cm wide ribbon and ears.

Put all the parts together. Mark out places for attaching parts. Sew around the perimeter. Leave a small hole at the bottom for turning inside out (segment VG). Turn out, iron.

Sew the fabric along the inner contour, leaving open the AB segment through which we will then insert a roll of padding polyester - this is a painstaking task, but doable.

After the roll is inserted into the side, sew up the hole. Cut out a piece from padding polyester that follows the contour of the “lounger”.

Insert it into the resulting pocket and sew up the hole. Make cross-stitching to secure the padding polyester inside. Insert the cord. Adjust the length as desired.

The cocoon is ready, but you can decorate it with a chic bow made from leftover fabric and padding polyester.

The size of the rectangle is 35 cm by 20 cm. The bow can also be used as a pillow. And if you also sew a toy – a “Scops Owl” – you will get just a great gift - here.

Her eyes can be embroidered or painted with acrylic paint.
